Creative Development
This brief required us to develop a project that reflected our own creative interests, strengths and integrity. We could explore themes and concepts that have always interested us and hone in our crafting skills based on the direction we would like to pursue after our undergraduate studies. Our final submission had to be in the form an exhibition where we would display the work we had produced.
Being a VEGA student we are encouraged to be innovative and contemporary artists. We are taught that in order to stay on top, you have to be current and up to date with the trends and styles that are out there. In the world that we live in today, everything has become digital. Even art. As a graphic designer there are a plethora of different programs that are at my disposal when creating a piece of art. Without these programmes I would not be able to produce the work I have created in the past. It is from this insight that I grasped the concept of my exhibition. I want to show that I am not just a graphic designer that manipulates images on a screen but that I am an artist.
Back To Basics is based around using my most fundamental and basic tool, my hands. I have chosen to work in the mediums of Lino-Printing and Sculpture because these two mediums require a lot of patience, skill and precision. Once a carve has been made it cannot simply be removed. Once the clay has set you cannot manipulate it further.

No woopsiedaisies. No cmd+D. No erasing. No mistakes.

Lino Prints
Animals

The first thre Lino carvings I completed were the fox, the fish, and the whale. I used animals as my subject matter after looking at the work of Nick Morley and his ability to create movement in his lino prints by making carves that follow the proportions of the subject. I applied this technique to my works entitled “Foxy” and “Movement”. I find that this adds depth and texture to the pieces.

Star Wars

For this series I wanted to combine new-age subject matter with the old and traditional style that is Lino printing. This is why I decided to use the characters from the famous movies, Star Wars. I felt like these characters would resonate with the audience that would be viewing my work and would give a new feel and look to Lino Printing.
